Turkey and Iraq reaffirm their commitment to water cooperation

Turkey and Iraq have reaffirmed their commitment to water cooperation during the second meeting of the Joint Standing Committee for the Development of Cooperation in the field of Water, held in Baghdad. High-level officials from Turkish water institutions attended the meeting, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration.

The meeting focused on creating a common vision and roadmap for efficient water use, considering challenges like climate change and population growth. Discussions also included topics such as utilizing wastewater for sustainability, reducing evaporation from dams, and improving water efficiency in agriculture through joint projects.

Turkey is dedicated to maintaining water cooperation with Iraq and is determined to achieve positive results through scientific approaches. Concrete projects are seen as key to further enhancing this cooperation.

Last August, during Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s visit to Iraq, the two countries agreed to establish a committee on water cooperation. Turkey, facing water scarcity issues in a region vulnerable to climate change, has taken steps like releasing water downstream even during drought periods.

In addition to national water efficiency campaigns, Turkey is proactively managing water resources to address future water stress challenges.
