Ministry’s urgent action plan initiated for addressing pollution in Izmir Bay
The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change has formed a Scientific Committee to address pollution in Izmir Bay. During their first meeting, Deputy Minister Fatma Varank emphasized the urgent need for an action plan due to fish deaths threatening the ecosystem and Biodiversity.
The committee aims to tackle the complex environmental issues contributing to the crisis in Izmir Bay. Minister Murat Kurum has directed the development of a roadmap for urgent actions, leading to the establishment of the Izmir Bay Scientific Committee consisting of 35 academics.
The urgent action plan, set to be unveiled by the end of September, will focus on climate change, wastewater infrastructure, and marine ecosystem improvement. The goal is to protect Izmir Bay and prevent further incidents, with plans for long-term sustainability expected by November.
Key stakeholders, including Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and relevant institutions, will collaborate closely to implement the action plan effectively. This initiative demonstrates the ministry’s commitment to environmental protection and ensuring a healthier Izmir Bay for future generations.
