Excavation Season Commences at Historic Balatlar Complex in Sinop
Excavations have begun at the Balatlar Complex in Sinop, northern Turkey, supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Turkish Historical Society. Over the past 14 years, archaeologists have uncovered 1600-year-old mosaic pavements, remains of churches, baths, sculptures, and animal figurines. This year, the focus is on finding new artifacts.
Governor Mustafa Özarslan visited the excavation site and was briefed by Professor Dr. Gülgün Köroğlu, the Head of Excavations. Özarslan emphasized the historical significance of the findings, stating that they are not just monetary objects but representations of Sinop’s cultural heritage.
Last year, pebble mosaic floors from the Hellenistic period were discovered at the Balatlar Building Complex, indicating it was once a “dining room of a wealthy family.” These findings highlight Sinop’s rich history and its potential as one of the world’s most important ancient cities. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism is providing full support to the excavation, with plans for restoration work to ensure the preservation of this valuable complex.
