Turkey Aims for Improved Water Efficiency and Establishes Ambitious Goals for the Future

Turkey is taking bold steps to improve water sustainability, with Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumaklı setting ambitious targets during the 2nd National Water Council meeting. By 2030, they aim to reduce the average daily water consumption per person from 150 liters to 120 liters, and by 2050, below 100 liters.

The National Water Council, established in November 2023, is working towards efficient water resource management through coordination and collaboration. Turkey is ranked among the 25 most water-scarce countries by the World Resources Institute, highlighting the country’s vulnerability.

The principle of ‘Zero Water Loss’ is being implemented to protect and manage water resources effectively. The agricultural sector, a key player in Turkey’s economy, is focusing on efficient land use, production planning, and water management for sustainable practices and Food Security.

Turkey is taking concrete measures to enhance water efficiency and manage flood risks, including reducing per capita water consumption, minimizing losses in water systems, and developing a Flood Forecasting and Early Warning System for vulnerable areas.

Collaboration among government agencies, local communities, and international partners is crucial to achieving these ambitious goals.
