Turkey is a Major Supplier of Fish to Europe



From 2002 to 2011, Turkey’s fishery industry experienced remarkable growth thanks to the policies implemented by the Food, Agriculture, and Husbandry Ministry. The industry saw a 264% increase, reaching a total value of 448 million dollars. Turkey has also become the leading trout producer in Europe and holds a 25% share of the European bream-bass market.

Supported by the ministry, the fishery industry received significant funding, with 737 million liras allocated over the past decade. Turkey has become the third-largest growth country in fishery production worldwide. In 2011, the country produced 185,000 tons of fish, marking a 202% increase from 2002. There are currently 1,720 inland facilities and 368 sea fish facilities in operation, with an additional 279 facilities awaiting licensing.

Turkey exports 80% of its fishery products to EU nations and has seen a significant increase in imports over the years. The country is actively promoting environmentally-friendly practices in fish farming through initiatives like the ‘Nationwide Sea Fish Farming Development Program’ and the ‘Protecting and Developing Fishery Products with Artificial Reefs Project.’
