How to Replace a Flight with a Long-Distance Bike Ride

Alternative to flying, Matilda Welin chose to embark on a long-distance cycling journey from London to Sweden to reduce her carbon footprint. Cycling is considered one of the most eco-friendly and cost-effective ways to travel short distances, and long-distance cycling tours are increasingly popular. In June 2024, Matilda cycled 1,500km from London to Sweden over 17 days, experiencing the true distance of her journey in a new way. Despite facing challenges like fatigue and weather, she found the experience rewarding and eye-opening.

During her trip, Matilda stayed in various accommodations, cycled through multiple countries, and interacted with locals along the way. While the financial cost of her journey was higher than a plane ticket, the personal and environmental benefits were significant. Cycling at a slower pace allowed her to appreciate the world around her and understand the impact of her travel choices. This experience inspired her to consider shorter cycling trips in the future and highlighted the importance of sustainable transportation options.
